This island takes its name after the Portuguese sailer who is said to have officially discovered it in 1528: Don Diego Rodriguez. For a long time, Rodrigues Island has been the "food stock" of the sailers who followed the Spices Road. These sailers were namely Dutch and would provide themselves with tortoises and drinkable water.
It was only in 1691 that François Leguat, a French Huguenot who came along with seven mates. Suffering from isolation and from the lack of female companionship, the group boarded for Mauritius two years later.
