Rodrigues Island is a volcanic island. It is an 18 kilometer-long and 8 kilometer-large "rock" lost in the middle of the Indian Ocean. With its108m2 round size, the "Cinderella of the Mascarene archipelago is located at 560 km at the east of Mauritius. Rodrigues has the particularity of being surrounded by a huge coral barrier and of having a lagoon that is twice its size. The capital is Port-Mathurin.
This island takes its name after the Portuguese sailer who is said to have officially discovered it in 1528: Don Diego Rodriguez. For a long time, Rodrigues has been the "food stock" of the sailers who followed the Spices Road. These sailers were namely Dutch and would provide themselves with tortoises and drinkable water.
It was only in 1691 that François Leguat, a French Huguenot who came along with seven mates. Suffering from isolation and from the lack of female companionship, the group boarded for Mauritius two years later.
The Mascarene archipelago colonization by the French Comapny of Eastern India led Rodrigues to be administrated by France. French colons, Indians people, Malgasi and African slaves .
In 1807, the Island was conquered by the British. When Mauritius got its independence in 1968, this island was to be ruled by its "big sister".
Rodrigues is ruled by Mauritius government. It is considered as its tenth district.
Most of the 38,000 - 40,000 inhabitants of the Island have African or French origins (They mainly come from western France and are gathered is the Baie aux Huîtres village).
When one thinks of Rodrigues, they immediately think of the "séga-tambour" dance and music. It made the Island famous on an international level.
98% of Rodriguan inhabitants are Christian. Religion is very important for most of Rodriguan people. There is also a minority of Jehovah witnesses, Muslims and Hinduists.
As the lagoon is twice its size, one traditionally eats freshly fished fish and sea food. The famous "ourites" (octopi) are the specialty of the island. Rodriguan meals are also traditionally based on corn, red beans and rice.
